Topic

The 1968 LA Walk Outs demonstrate walking out of class may be a desirable tactic for promoting social justice.

Topic Statement

From March 1 to March 8 1968, approximately 15,000 Los Angeles students walked out of their classes demanding educational equality and reform. These walk outs were spurred by the organizing efforts of groups such as the Brown Berets, United Mexican Students, and the Young Citizens for Community Action;  two local newspapers: La Raza and Inside Eastside; and Sal Castro, a Mexican American educator teaching at Lincoln.

At the USC Social Justice Debates affirmative teams are asked to defend the proposition that the 1968 walk outs demonstrate walking out of class may be a desirable tactic for promoting social justice. Negatives may rebut this proposition either by demonstrating the walk outs did not promote social justice objectives or by demonstrating that feasible, competing tactics that did not include walking out of class would have been more desirable.
